First stadium uses Li-Fi to provide fast, secure, and reliable Internet connectivity
2019-09-12

It is reported that Li-Fi (Visible light wireless communication technology) is installed at the Volkspark stadium of Bundesliga club HSV, making it the world’s first football club to adopt Li-Fi. Journalists can have Internet access using this new wireless communication method in their news center.

It is reported that the stadium which opened in 2000 can accommodate 57,000 people. It is one of the 10 stadiums for holding the UEFA Euro 2024 in Germany. It is also certified to host other top international championships.

Like many stadiums, the news center’s wireless signal is often overloaded due to the internet access by journalists as well as the interference of mobile devices used by fans, staff and officials. It is prone to the problems of lack of Internet access, causing great troubles for the journalists.

In view of this, Signify, a global lighting leader, installed Trufiifi, a Li-Fi product, at the stadium’s press center to provide journalists with highly reliable, secure, and fast Internet access through the ceiling-mounted lights.

Signify installed 84 Philips PowerBalance gen2 LED recessed lamps, 8 of which are equipped with integrated TruLi-Fi 6002 transceivers, which can modulate infrared waves, providing Internet connection up to 150 Mbps. Li-Fi systems are not subject to interference and encryption. In addition, an extra built-in security layer is provided, as light waves cannot penetrate walls.

“Given the growing demand for broadband at the press center, we choose Li-Fi. For them, reliable wireless connection is everything. They not only have quality light, and also reliable, fast and highly secure wireless connection”, said Daniel Nolte, head of venue organization and infrastructure at HSV.
